KYC Vendors Compared: Alloy vs Persona vs Onfido (2026 Guide)
Your KYC vendor is the difference between a smooth signup flow and a support-ticket avalanche. Alloy, Persona, and Onfido all work — but for different fintechs. Here's how to choose.

What KYC actually does
KYC (Know Your Customer) is the process of verifying a new user's identity before they can use financial products. In practice this involves:
- Document verification — ID card, passport, or driver's license
- Selfie/liveness check — matching a live face to the ID
- Data verification — SSN, address, DOB against government/utility/credit databases
- Sanctions & PEP screening — OFAC, EU sanctions, politically-exposed-persons
- Ongoing monitoring — re-screening customers monthly
Getting this wrong = regulatory fines, reputational damage, and bank-sponsor termination.
The three market leaders
- Alloy — orchestration platform; combines dozens of underlying vendors; best for complex flows
- Persona — vertically integrated; strong developer experience; best for fast setup
- Onfido — global reach; identity document specialists; best for cross-border
Others (Sardine, Prove, Socure, Middesk for businesses) are worth considering for specific use cases but the three above cover 80% of fintech needs.

Choose Alloy if
- You're at Series A+ and want the lowest false-positive rate
- You have complex KYC rules (e.g., higher verification for higher account limits)
- You need to swap underlying providers without changing your code
- Your compliance officer wants "orchestration" flexibility
Choose Persona if
- You're pre-Series A and want fast setup
- Developer experience matters (Persona's SDK is the cleanest of the three)
- Your compliance rules are relatively standard
- You want one clear invoice, not pass-through pricing
Choose Onfido if
- You have significant non-US users (Onfido is best-in-class for EU/UK/APAC)
- You need obscure document types (military IDs, refugee travel documents)
- You have an enterprise sales team
The false-positive problem
Every KYC vendor incorrectly rejects some legitimate users. This is called the "false-positive rate," and it's the single most-important metric to negotiate before signing.
Industry averages (2025 data):
- Alloy: 3–5% false positives
- Persona: 5–8%
- Onfido: 6–10%
- Legacy vendors (Jumio, Trulioo): 10–20%
At scale, a 5% difference is huge. If you sign 100,000 new users/year, 5,000 lost signups is very likely $2M+ in lost lifetime revenue. Push for guarantees.
Ongoing monitoring — the hidden cost
The KYC vendor doesn't just verify at signup. They also re-screen your existing users monthly against sanctions lists. If you have 500k users, that's 6M screens/year. Pricing for ongoing monitoring is usually $0.05–0.15 per screen, or $300k–$900k/year at that scale.
Alloy tends to be cheapest here because they can orchestrate cheaper screening providers. Persona and Onfido bundle this in higher.
The Middesk consideration for B2B
If you serve businesses (not just consumers), you also need business verification: EIN, articles of incorporation, beneficial-ownership disclosures. Middesk dominates this space in the US, and all three consumer-KYC vendors integrate with them. Budget separately.
Where AtlasForge fits
We don't do KYC. Our platform sits downstream of KYC and works with any vendor. Partners typically verify with Persona or Alloy at signup, then feed the verified user into our API to get the Safe to Spend 365 / cash-flow-insights layer.
