Card Issuing 2026: Lithic vs Marqeta vs Highnote (Founder's Guide)

Card Issuing 2026: Lithic vs Marqeta vs Highnote (Founder's Guide)

Why "just use Stripe Issuing" isn't the answer

Stripe Issuing is fine — for startups that are already deeply integrated with Stripe. For everyone else, three specialist issuers offer better card programs at competitive prices:

  • Lithic — best developer experience; strong for consumer + business cards
  • Marqeta — market leader; strongest for enterprise scale; complex sales cycle
  • Highnote — newer entrant; strongest for credit cards + rewards; sales-led

Below is the honest comparison.

Choose Lithic if

  • You're pre-Series B and want to move fast
  • Your card program is for consumers (Safe to Spend 365 Card, credit builder, etc.)
  • Developer experience matters (real docs, real sandbox, real Slack support)
  • You want no minimums to start

Lithic is the go-to for card-launching fintech founders in 2026. Ramp, Privacy.com, and Lyft's earlier card programs all shipped on Lithic (originally "PrivacyLithic").

Choose Marqeta if

  • You're at scale (>500k cards, >$500M/year TPV)
  • You need to bring your own sponsor bank
  • You have a dedicated card ops team
  • You're in enterprise B2B (Instacart, Uber, DoorDash all use Marqeta)

Marqeta's ceiling is higher than Lithic's. The floor is also higher.

Choose Highnote if

  • Your product is a credit card (not debit)
  • You have a rewards program (points, cashback, category multipliers)
  • You want native ledgering + reserve accounting
  • You're launching a co-branded card

Highnote's founder team came from Marqeta's original credit card group. Their credit card feature depth is unmatched by Lithic in 2026.

Sponsor bank considerations

Every card program requires a chartered sponsor bank. The sponsor bank determines:

  • BIN (the first 6 digits of your card number)
  • KYC/AML program requirements
  • Reserve requirements (deposit you keep with them)
  • How quickly you can launch

Lithic includes sponsor bank (Sutton Bank, Cross River, and a few others). Marqeta expects you to bring your own — you'll negotiate directly with Cross River, Piermont, or Metabank. This adds 6–12 weeks.

For most founders, Lithic's bundled sponsor path is dramatically faster than the alternative.

The Synapse effect

Since the 2024 Synapse collapse, sponsor banks have tightened significantly:

  • Higher reserve deposits (typically 30 days of TPV)
  • More granular ledger requirements ("For Benefit Of" accounts are now standard)
  • Deeper compliance operations expectations from partners
  • More frequent audit cadence

None of the three issuers escape this — the trend is industry-wide.

Real-world unit economics

AtlasForge integration

AtlasForge doesn't issue cards ourselves — but our platform works alongside any issuer. If you're launching a card and want your users to see a Safe to Spend 365 number driven by the card's transaction stream, our API plugs into your issuer's webhooks. See the Developer Docs.
